FAQs

Catholic Charismatic Renewal – Proclaiming throughout N.S.W. the power of the Holy Spirit and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

What is Baptism In The Holy Spirit?

‘Baptism in the Holy Spirit’, sometimes called the ‘Release of the Holy Spirit’ or ‘A new outpouring of the Holy Spirit’, is an experience of the Holy Spirit which brings about a change in a person’s life which involves experiencing the Holy Spirit in a new way. This is a specific grace of God experienced through prayer.

Both Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II spoke of this experience as an ‘effusion’ (bursting out) of the Spirit; a flowering of the sacramental grace already received in Baptism and Confirmation.

Pope Benedict XVI Pentecost 2008 said: “Let us rediscover, dear brothers and sisters, the beauty of being baptised in the Holy Spirit; let us be aware again of our Baptism and our Confirmation, sources of grace which are always present.”

What are the gifts of the Holy Spirit?

There are different types of Spiritual Gifts. The prophet Isaiah 11:2-3 speaks of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit which are received by the power of the Spirit at Confirmation for the empowering of each Christian.

The nine gifts about which St Paul wrote in his first letter to the Corinthians 12-14, sometimes called the Charismatic Gifts, are different from those identified by Isaiah. Paul spoke about the nine gifts as ‘manifestations’ of the Spirit - spiritual gifts enabling us to be more aware of God’s presence. When we see or experience a spiritual gift operating we realize that the Spirit is at work. There are more workings of the Spirit than those that Paul enumerates in 1 Corinthians 12, but these are enough to give us an idea of what spiritual gifts can be. These particular gifts are given for service to the community.

The letter to the Galatians 5:22-24 Speaks of the Fruits of the Spirit. Perfections that the Spirit forms in us and show that the Spirit is alive in us.

What is a Charismatic Prayer Meeting?

A Catholic Charismatic Renewal Prayer Meeting consists of a group of people from varying backgrounds who meet together on a regular basis,(usually weekly), to pray together in an effort to grow in the love of God and neighbour, and to grow, encourage, and affirm people in the use of spiritual gifts.

The meeting takes place in a relaxed atmosphere where joy and the love of God are emphasised, and God is praised with enthusiasm. The Word of God is listened to, and regular teaching instructs and helps people to grow in their life in the Spirit.
